Recently, from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) website news that the U.S. Department of Defense issued a funding bill (2015) - marine lighting system, clearly encourages LED lighting in the Navy, and urged the navy to adjust the lighting product specifications, no restrictions on the use of LED lighting, LED lighting and according to the characteristics of development all ships used for a series of LED lighting products. From the perspective of life cycle cost, the lighting transformation of new ships and old ships should be given priority to the use of LED.

The US Navy also issued a document about this. The content is probably that the US Navy is trying to promote the application of LED lighting on ships. The use of LED lighting will reduce the fuel consumption of ships, reduce maintenance costs and reduce toxic and harmful substances (fluorescent lamps contain mercury). From 2015 onwards, all new ship project manager must purchase LED lighting, LED lighting for each ship procurement and installation fee of up to $2 million, such as project executive with LED lighting special ship procurement and installation fee of up to $10 million.

NAVSEA LED launched a pilot project, the original ship is the military standard T12 lamp, T12 lamp with a diameter of 38.1mm, instead of LED T8 tubediameter is 25.4mm, the original design of the protection cap fixing buckle not completely stuck, will cause the lamp in the lamp shaking. In order to solve the problem of replacing the light source diameter, NAVSEA adopted the way of bushing, that is, the yellow transparent glass tube of T12 was covered on the LED T8 tube, and the starter and ballast of the original lamp were removed. After testing, the replaced T8 lamps meet the requirements of the military earthquake resistance and safety.

From the point of view of energy saving, LED has more than 50% energy saving than fluorescent lamps. Compared with fluorescent lamp tube life 9000 hours, the life of LED lamp is 50000 hours, which is almost the total life of 5 fluorescent lamps. Because the cost of labor on warships is very expensive, especially for large ships, if the life of LED can reach 100 thousand hours, it will save a lot of money for the army. According to each LED lamp, we need to save 35 US dollars per year for fuel power generation. According to a naval vessel with 5500 lamps and 30 years of service, it will save 5 million 800 thousand dollars for every US Navy ship and reduce 72 kW load for the generator set on the ship.
